Helen Keller
If there was ever a story that shows children they can do anything despite the odds, it is Helen Keller’s story. She was the first deaf-blind person in the world to write a book and went on to write 14 published books in her lifetime. She was also the first deaf-blind person to gain a bachelor’s degree. Throughout her lifetime, Helen campaigned for the rights of people with disabilities and also founded the American Civil Liberties Union.
Kelly Holmes
Kelly Holmes’ sporting career was filled with challenges and setbacks. The tenacious British middle-distance runner tried for years to win an Olympic gold medal. Her last chance came in 2004 but was almost stolen away from her again by a leg injury that threatened to ground her. With sheer will and determination, Kelly battled through injury and severe depression to win not one but two Olympic gold medals.
Amelia Earheart
In a male-dominated society, Amelia Earheart, an intrepid adventurer and pilot, forged a path for women’s rights by becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for this magnificent feat – the first woman to receive such an honour. Where other women were held back from many professionals and discovering their true potential, Amelia was soaring high above the clouds, breaking records, and refusing to be held back. Sadly, Amelia disappeared somewhere over the Pacific while attempting to fly around the globe. We can take a lot of comfort from the fact that she died doing what she loved best.
